WHY SPECIALIST MAINTENANCE EXISTS

Why Most Car Washes Damage Ceramic Coatings

Most car washes use products designed for unprotected paint, harsh detergents, traffic film removers, anything that cuts through grime quickly. On a ceramic coating, those same products degrade the hydrophobic layer. The water stops beading, the coating looks patchy and the £400 you spent on a 5 year coating effectively becomes a 12 month coating, because the products meant to clean it have been degrading it instead.

Automatic car washes are worse. The abrasive brushes that swirl unprotected paint also score and degrade ceramic coatings and the rubber strips at the entry barriers leave marks no coating can defend against. If you’ve been running a coated car through automatic washes, the coating’s working harder than it should be, just to mask the damage being done by the wash itself.

Manchester’s specific conditions make this worse. Winter road salt clings to lower body panels for weeks. M60 and M62 commutes lay down road grime that bonds to whatever’s been left on the paint. Industrial fallout from Trafford Park and Salford Quays drifts on prevailing winds. Coated cars driven in Greater Manchester need more careful attention than average not less. Specialist maintenance is the difference between a 5 year ceramic coating that lasts five years and one that fails inside two.

THE NINE STEP MAINTENANCE PROTOCOL

Nine Steps One Standard Same Coating, Maintained Properly.

Every 6 monthly technical visit follows this nine step protocol across all three maintenance plans. Products chosen specifically for coated surfaces, no shortcuts, full inspection before and after.

Step 01

Snow Foam Pre-Wash

Coating safe foam loosens road grime before the car's touched. Lifts dirt away so it can be rinsed off without dragging across the coating.

Step 02

Two Bucket Safe Hand Wash

Two buckets, two grit guards, one wash mitt that never goes back in the soapy bucket once it's touched the panel. The technique that actually keeps swirl marks out of coated paint.

Step 03

Iron Fallout Removal

Brake dust and metal contamination embed in the clear coat over time orange specks the eye doesn't always spot but feels rough. A dedicated iron remover dissolves it without affecting the coating.

Step 04

Tar & Bonded Contamination

Tar splatter, tree sap residue, stubborn contamination that won't shift with washing. Removed with safe solvents that don't strip the coating beneath.

Step 05

Coating Health Check & Condition Report

I inspect every panel under proper lighting looking for thin spots, water spot etching, areas where the coating's compromised. You get a written report so you know exactly where the coating's at.

Step 06

Ceramic Coating Booster Application

A coating safe booster top up that refreshes the hydrophobic layer, restoring water beading performance and extending the coating's effective life. Same product family as your original coating designed to work together.

Step 07

Wheels Cleaned & Sealed

Brake dust shifted with a coating safe wheel cleaner, then a wheel specific protectant to keep the alloy faces easier to clean for months.

Step 08

Glass Cleaned with Coating Safe Products

Streak free glass with no chemical residues that could migrate onto coated panels. If your glass was originally ceramic coated as an add on, the booster gets applied here too.

Step 09

Trim Dressed & Door Shuts Cleaned

Plastic trim refreshed with a UV protective dressing no greasy finish, no overspray on coated paint. Door shuts cleaned and dressed so the small details aren't forgotten.

Three Reasons People Book a Maintenance Visit

EXISTING CUSTOMERS

Coatings I've Applied

If your coating came from me, maintenance is the natural next step. I know exactly which coating product is on your car, what condition the paint was in when it was coated, and what booster pairs best with it. Continuity of care, no second guessing.

OTHER PROVIDERS

Coatings From Anywhere

Got a coating from another company? Doesn’t matter  I’ll maintain it properly. The protocol’s the same: identify what’s on the paint (Gtechniq, GYEON, IGL, CarPro most products are cross compatible at maintenance level), use coating safe products, apply a compatible booster. Coating’s still yours, just looked after by someone who knows what they’re doing.

The Monthly Exterior + Interior plan (Tier 3) is the one exception that’s exclusive to exterior & interior ceramic coating customers from me but Tier 1 and Tier 2 work for any coating, any provider.

STILL DECIDING?

Considering a Coating

Researching whether to invest in a 5 or 10 year ceramic coating ? Knowing the aftercare’s sorted matters. The coating’s the headline cost. Maintenance is what makes it actually deliver the warranty period you paid for. Add the annual plan when you book the coating and you’ve got the full picture covered. See coating packages →

MAINTENANCE QUESTIONS

Ceramic Coating Maintenance - Common Questions

For technical maintenance (decontamination + booster), every six months is the sweet spot,  that’s the cadence built into all three of my maintenance plans. Low mileage weekend drivers kept in a garage can sometimes stretch to 9–12 months between visits. Daily driven motorway commuters or cars parked outside year round need six months as the minimum.
The 6 Monthly plan covers exactly that cadence (£125 single visit or £200/year for both visits – saves £50). If you’d rather not wash the car between visits at all, the Monthly plans add a coating safe wash every month with the technical work still happening every 6 months – pay annually, get 2 months free.

Yes, but only with the right products and technique. The basics: A decent car shampoo that contains no wax, silicons etc  (£15–20 a bottle from any decent detailing supplier), two bucket method with grit guards, soft microfibre wash mitt, microfibre drying towel.

Avoid: dish soap, traffic film removers, automatic car washes, brush washes at petrol stations, anything labelled as “wax wash” or “wash and wax.” If you wash between maintenance visits with the right kit, you’re  keeping the coating in good condition. Just don’t fall back on the cheap and easy options when you’re in a hurry. That’s how coatings get prematurely killed.

If you’d rather not deal with any of this yourself, my Monthly Exterior plan covers the wash properly every month using coating safe products saves you sourcing the kit, the technique, and the time. Either way works for the coating.

pH-neutral car shampoos are the baseline, anything with a pH between 6 and 8. Brand wise i recommend Performance PPL

Avoid anything from a supermarket aisle unless it specifically states “ceramic coating safe” on the label, and even then read the ingredients. For the booster top up, I use a ceramic coating booster designed specifically for coated surfaces  compatible with virtually all current ceramic coating products on the market.

No  proper maintenance is what keeps the warranty valid. Most major ceramic coating warranty terms require maintenance washes with coating safe products, periodic decontamination, and ideally a booster top up at the recommended intervals.

Skipping maintenance, or worse, using harsh chemicals between visits, IS what voids warranties. The annual plan keeps you on the right side of the warranty terms by default.

Honest answer: the coating still works, just less well, and for less time than the warranty suggests. You’ll see the water stop beading after 18 24 months instead of 5 years. The coating looks patchy. Bird mess, sap, and contamination start etching through to the clear coat. The hydrophobic finish that was the whole point of the coating starts degrading.

In real numbers: a 5 year coating without maintenance often degrades to wax equivalent performance inside 18 months. A maintained coating delivers the full 5 years and often longer.

Yes, for the 6 Monthly Maintenance plan and the Monthly Exterior plan, I maintain coatings applied by other companies regularly. The technical protocol’s the same regardless of whose coating’s on the car. On the first visit I assess what’s been applied, check the coating’s condition, and identify the right booster product to apply (most major coatings are cross compatible at maintenance level).
The Monthly Exterior + Interior plan is the exception – it’s exclusive to customers who’ve had both exterior ceramic coating and interior protection from me, so it isn’t available for coatings from other providers. The other two tiers cover it.
