Paint Correction in Manchester, Included With Every Ceramic Coating

If you have searched for paint correction in Manchester, chances are you have seen your paintwork in direct sun and noticed the swirls. Here is the straight answer before you read any further. I machine polish every car I coat, and it is built into the price rather than added as an extra. What I do not do is take on correction as a one off job with nothing going on top of it afterwards.

THE HONEST ANSWER

Why Paint Correction On Its Own Rarely Holds Up

Machine polishing works by removing a measured amount of clear coat until the surface sits level with the bottom of the defect. That is what makes a swirl disappear. It is also why correction is not something you can repeat indefinitely, because the clear coat on a modern car is only a few dozen microns thick and every correction spends a little of it.

So the question that matters is what happens to that freshly levelled surface the day after I leave. With nothing protecting it, the paint goes straight back into contact with sponges, brushes, drive through washes and grit, and light swirling starts returning within a few months of normal washing. You have spent the clear coat and got a season out of it.

A ceramic coating changes that arithmetic. It sits on top as a sacrificial layer, takes the wash contact instead of the paint, and keeps the corrected finish looking the way it did on handover day for years rather than months. Correcting the paint and then coating it is one job with one purpose, and splitting the two apart is where the money gets wasted.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What the Included Machine Polish Actually Removes

Every coating package includes a single stage machine polish as standard. Here is an honest split of what that deals with, and what it will not touch.

Comes out

  • Swirl marks from sponges, brushes and automatic car washes
  • Wash marks and light scratching across the panels
  • Light oxidation on older or neglected paint
  • Water spotting that has not yet etched deeply
  • Dulling that makes a colour look flat rather than deep
  • Light holograms left by a previous machine polish

Stays put

  • Stone chips, which are missing paint rather than damaged paint
  • Deep key scratches that have gone through the clear coat
  • Etching that has already reached the base coat or primer
  • Anything your fingernail catches in
  • Dents, scuffs and anything needing bodyshop work
  • Damage on panels resprayed too thinly to polish safely

The fingernail test, before I even arrive

Run a fingernail lightly across the mark. If your nail does not catch, it is almost certainly a clear coat defect and it will polish out or improve significantly. If your nail catches in it, the damage has gone deeper than polishing can safely reach, and no amount of machine work will remove it without taking off more clear coat than the car can spare. I will tell you which you have at the quote stage rather than after the fact, and if a panel needs bodyshop work instead of polishing, I will say so.

THE UPGRADE

When the Two Stage Upgrade Is Worth £149

The single stage handles the majority of cars I see. Some paint needs more, and for those there is a two stage upgrade at £149 on top of the package price.

Two stage means a cutting compound pass to take out the heavier defects, followed by a refining pass to remove the haze the compound leaves behind. It adds roughly an hour and a half to two hours to the day. It earns its money on black and dark metallic paint where every defect shows, on older cars carrying years of accumulated wash marks, and on any car with holograms from a previous polish that was done too fast with the wrong pad.

It is usually not worth it on a car under a year old with light swirling, and I would rather tell you that than take the extra £149. This is an upgrade to the polish stage, not a service you can book on its own.

Quick Guide

Which stage does your car need?

Single stage, included

Light to moderate swirling, most colours, cars up to around five years old that have been washed reasonably.

Two stage, plus £149

Black and dark metallics, older paint, heavy wash marks, or holograms from previous machine work.

Neither, and I will say so

Nearly new car with almost no defects. The included polish is plenty and the upgrade would be money wasted.

THE PROCESS

How the Correction Stage Fits Into the Day

The exterior day runs five to seven hours, and the polish sits in the middle of a sequence that matters as much as the polishing itself.

Step 01

Paint assessment on arrival

I inspect the paint under proper lighting before touching anything, so we agree what is coming out and what is not. If the spec needs to change, you hear it before I start, never afterwards.

Step 02

Pre wash and two bucket wash

Grit lifted off before any contact, so I am not grinding it into the paint I am about to correct.

Step 03

Iron fallout and tar removal

Chemical decontamination for the bonded contaminants that a wash leaves behind, including brake dust embedded in the horizontal panels.

Step 04

Clay bar, panel by panel

Anything still physically bonded to the surface comes off here, because polishing over it drags it across the paint and creates fresh marring.

Step 05

Machine polish

Single stage as standard, two stage if we have agreed the upgrade. Worked panel by panel under controlled lighting so nothing is missed.

Step 06 · The one nobody mentions

Panel wipe with prep solvent

Every panel stripped of polishing oils. This does two jobs: it reveals the true finish rather than an oiled-up version of it, and it leaves the clear coat clean enough for the coating to bond properly. Skipping it is how coatings end up failing early, because the coating bonds to the oil rather than to the paint.

Step 07

Coating applied and levelled

Applied panel by panel, flashed off and levelled, then the written warranty and aftercare guide handed over before I leave.

GREATER MANCHESTER

What Manchester Paint Usually Looks Like When I Arrive

Cars around Greater Manchester carry a fairly predictable mix, and not all of it is wash marks.

Motorway film and brake dust

Commuters on the M60 and M62 come in with baked on traffic grime and iron fallout embedded across the bonnet, roof and boot lid. It needs chemical decontamination before a polisher goes anywhere near it.

Industrial fallout

Anything parked around Trafford Park or Salford Quays picks up airborne fallout that shows as tiny orange specks in lighter colours. Clay and iron remover deal with it, polishing alone does not.

Winter road salt

Salt leaves a dulling haze across the lower panels and sills that most owners assume is permanent. A good proportion of it lifts during decontamination before the polish stage even starts.

Bird lime and tree sap etching

Bird lime left on a bonnet through a hot week etches into the clear coat, and sap around places like Heaton Park does something similar. Etching sits differently to swirling. Some polishes out, deeper etching has already gone too far, and I will tell you which you have when I look at it.

PRICING

What It Costs, and Why It Is Not a Separate Line on Your Invoice

Most coating companies quote the coating, then add £200 to £400 for paint preparation and polishing. I do not.

Applying ceramic over swirled paint just seals the damage in for the life of the coating, and I am not interested in doing that to someone's car. All three tiers get exactly the same preparation and the same machine polish, so what separates them is the coating chemistry and the length of the warranty, not the amount of work that goes into the paint beforehand. The price I quote is the price you pay, agreed before I start, with travel anywhere in Greater Manchester included.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Paint Correction, Answered Honestly

Can I book paint correction without a ceramic coating?
No. I only carry out correction as part of a coating package, because unprotected corrected paint starts swirling again within months and you end up paying for the same work twice. If you want the finish to last, the protection has to go on top of it.
Will machine polishing remove every scratch?
No, and anyone promising that is overselling. Swirls, wash marks and light defects come out. Anything your fingernail catches in has gone deeper than polishing can safely reach, and forcing it would take off clear coat the car cannot spare.
How long does the correction stage take?
The full exterior day runs five to seven hours, with the polish itself taking up a substantial share of that. The two-stage upgrade adds roughly another hour and a half to two hours on top.
Is a single stage polish enough for a black car?
Often it is, but black and dark metallics show every defect, so they are the paint most likely to justify the two-stage upgrade. I will look at the panels on arrival and give you a straight answer before any work starts.
Does machine polishing damage the paint?
Done properly it removes a small, controlled amount of clear coat, which is exactly how the defect is removed. Done badly, or repeated too often without protection, it thins the clear coat unnecessarily. That is the main argument for coating afterwards.
